4 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Self Storage Unit

Self Storage Unit

Self-storage units are great for storing your items for the long term. They protect your belongings from the sun, wind, rain, and other elements of nature and also keeps them safe from intruders. But since a self-storage unit has only so much space, your goal should be to utilize every space available so that everything fits neatly into it.

Here are some easy packing tips for getting the most out of your self-storage unit:

1. Choose the storage facility carefully:

When renting a self-storage unit, the safety and security of your belongings should be among your top concerns. So, make sure the storage facility has adequate security measures in place and that you will be able to get access to your self-storage unit whenever you need to. A good storage facility should have adequate climate control and pest control measures in place. Price is another important factor when choosing a self-storage facility. Get price estimates from at least three companies and make sure that they are among the best storage companies in your area.

2. Do not think price only:

Naturally, you will want to go for the lowest price when renting a self-storage unit. But you should not allow your cost considerations to compromise the safety and security of your belongings and ease of access. The facility should be conveniently located near your place and allow you access to your self-storage unit whenever you need to retrieve and put anything into it.

3. Make sure your things are insured:

You can never rule out damages and losses due to natural and man-made disasters such as fire, flooding, and arson even in the highest security storage facility. Therefore, it is important to have your valuable belongings insured. If you have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, find out if the policy covers the items in your self-storage unit. If you don’t have either of these policies or if they do not cover the items in your self-storage unit, make sure to buy at least the minimum amount of insurance offered by your self-storage company.

4. Pack your belongings neatly and tidily:

Do not make the mistake of throwing all your belongings into the self-storage unit. That is one of the best ways to damage them. Pack them neatly in boxes. Put the taller and heavier items into the self-storage unit first. Place tall items, such as the washing machine, against the wall. Put boxes containing lighter and fragile items on top of the boxes containing bulky items. Make sure to label the boxes so that you will be able to find the things you need easily. Place the things you may need to take out frequently near the entrance for easy access.

No matter where your things are stored, be sure to organize your self-storage unit so that whenever you visit to pick out a few things, you don’t spend the whole day shuffling through all the items.  After all, the key to getting the most out of your storage unit is keeping things tidy for easy access.  Got any other tips on self-storage units?
