How to Organize Your Self-Storage Unit

Self-storage unit

If you’re planning a move soon, you may have realized that you don’t need all your furniture right away. You may also have valuable items that you don’t want to dispose of, but you’re not sure if you want to use them in the new house. If this sounds like you, it may be time to consider getting a self-storage unit. These easy packing tips from Unpakt can make your transition into a new residence a lot less stressful.

Label Your Boxes

Place white labels on all your boxes, and use a black permanent marker to label them. This way, you’ll know exactly what’s in every box and you can locate it within minutes when you come back to your storage unit. Use Unpakt’s Box Guide, so you’ll know what size and shape boxes you need to store your belongings.

Put Heavy Items On The Bottom

This is one of the self-storage tips that you won’t want to forget. Your larger furniture like sofas and tables should be at the bottom of the storage unit. This keeps the delicate items from being crushed or damaged while they’re being stored. If you have to stack boxes, make sure the stack is balanced to keep your furniture pieces from breaking.

Store In Plastic

In order to keep mildew and mold from ruining your furniture, wrap it in plastic. The plastic also prevents weather damage and is much more effective than cardboard. You can also apply a moisture protectant to your furniture. This will keep the fabric of the furniture pieces intact during storage.

Make A List

Make sure that you know everything that is in your storage unit by keeping a list. You can make a list before you start packing everything into the unit and create another list as you’re loading your items into your storage unit to make sure all your items are accounted for. Then, compare the lists to make sure you didn’t forget to store anything.

Place Frequently Used Items In The Front

Finally, if there are important items that you know you’ll need right away, place them near the front of the storage unit. For instance, if you store clothes that are out of season in the unit, put the clothing in a spot where you can get to it easily as the season changes. This can significantly reduce your frustration and make all your items easy to find.
