How to Choose a Self-Storage Facility

Self-Storage Facility

Self-storage facilities can come in very handy if you are moving or trying to stay more organized. With so many options, how do you choose a self-storage facility that is the right fit for your needs? These tips will help you decide.

Decide what to store

You need to figure out how much space you need before you can look for a facility that has that type of unit for you to rent. Do you have furniture, antiques, paperwork or a boat or vehicle that needs to be stored? The type of storage you need varies depending on what you are storing; you’ll definitely need climate controls for antiques or artwork, but outdoor storage is fine for your RV.

Check insurance requirements

Look at your homeowner’s insurance or renter’s policy to see if it will cover the items you’ll be storing. The insurance company might stipulate the type of storage you must use to be covered by your policy. Alternately, you can find a facility that offers insurance or your stored items.

Check facility features

Look for a storage facility that gives you access to your belongings when you need it; some have gated, 24-hour access and others are only accessible during business hours. Also, consider the security of the facility; it should be fenced and hopefully have working security cameras.

Is the distance reasonable?

No matter how good a deal you get on a unit, you will soon hate driving across town to get to it if it will be used for more than just a short time. Convenience is important and is worth paying a little more for a closer location.

Know facility policies

Each facility has its own rules. Some only rent for set contracted periods and others do month-to-month rentals. Most facilities have restrictions on the types of items you can store in their units so make sure if it is not a common item to check their rules. Be aware of the rules and follow them so that your belongings are safeguarded.

Check reviews

Look online for previous user’s reviews before you make your final choice. Look for one that gives good service and is convenient.

Make some phone calls

While you won’t be interacting with the manager often, if they are short with you on the phone, or rude, move on to the next place. Good storage center managers understand the importance of good customer service and will cheerfully answer your questions.

No matter which storage facility you decide to use, be sure that it suits your needs and is convenient, and within your budget.
