Moving Do’s and Don’ts

Moving Do's and Don’ts

Moving is a huge project that can either be super exciting and enjoyable or incredibly stressful and a total nightmare. If you search online for moving do’s and don’ts, you will often find dozens of different sites that all have a few great points. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was one guide that you could print and keep handy? Well look no further, these moving dos and don’ts from Unpakt were hand selected to help you have a pleasant experience.

DO Compare Movers

You may find that you can get just as good of a deal with a highly respected company as you can with some of the cheap moving companies on Unpakt. Be sure to plan ahead and move on an off-day.

DON’T Wait Until the Last Minute

The earlier you start planning your move, the smoother it will go. There are plenty of things you can do two months prior so you are not overwhelmed with tasks at the last minute.

DO Create Lists

You may want to create one universal checklist of everything you need to do, or you might prefer to make weekly checklists to stay on track. Do whatever works best for you.

DON’T Pay for Moving Supplies

You can find used boxes that are free at restaurants, bars, and stores. You do not need bubble wrap or other packing supplies either; towels, linens, tees, blankets and sweaters work just fine.

DO Make Sure You Have Enough Insurance

This is especially important if you have expensive jewels, collections or antiques. Even if you plan on moving these items yourself, you will want to check with your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance to make sure you have adequate coverage should there be a problem.

DON’T Withhold Information From Your Inventory

When booking your job on Unpakt, make sure that your inventory is as accurate as possible. You will have up until two days prior to your move to adjust, but being accurate from the start will help make sure you’re viewing the correct prices.

DO Get Measurements

Measure twice, move once! If you assume that sectional sofa or king size bed will fit just by looking at the space, you could find yourself in an awkward situation when it doesn’t. Not to mention, you have to make sure these items will fit through hallways, doorways, etc.

DON’T Sign Paperwork You Don’t Understand

Take the time to read things over. If you have questions, make sure you get them answered before you sign. Live chat or call Unpakt at any time – 855.2Unpakt

DO Pack a “Carry On” Bag

This will include everything you need to get you through at least the first day, such as clothes, toiletries, snacks, etc.

DON’T Pass Up the Offer of a Babysitter

Moving is a lot easier when you don’t have kids around. Chances are good that you always have people offering to babysit, so why not take advantage of them? This goes for pets too. If you can drop your four-legged friend at someone’s house for the day, it is a good idea. Plus, they won’t have to be stressed watching someone they don’t know carry and move around “their” stuff.

DO Label Boxes Clearly

You don’t want to actually list what’s in the boxes, but you can list the room or use colored stickers to identify them. It will make unpacking much easier.

DON’T Forget to Declutter

Just because you get a great price does not mean you should just move everything. There is probably plenty of stuff you don’t need; take this opportunity to sell, donate or trash these items.
