How to Measure for New Furniture

Measure for New Furniture

Whether you are downsizing or moving into your first place, if you are hiring small apartment movers, then there is a good chance that a little measuring needs to be done. Not only will a small space become dwarfed with over-sized furniture, there’s a good chance that some pieces may not fit at all. Unless you know without a shadow of a doubt that you have an abundance of space for your current furniture or items you intend on purchasing, it is crucial that you measure carefully.

If you find that your current furniture are too big for your new apartment (or maybe simply don’t fit the deign) don’t worry, You can easily sell furniture on Craig’slist and purchase new.

Measuring Your room

It is not enough to simply know the length of one wall or the square feet of the room. There are a lot of other things to consider, such as:

  • Where are the electrical outlets?
  • Is there a door to the room? If so, does it open into the room or away from it?
  • Where are the windows placed on the walls, and what height are they at?
  • Will you need space to allow tables for lamps?

Using a piece of paper and pencil, you will create a floor plan of your room. Begin by measuring the perimeter. On this diagram, you will draw your doors, windows and closets. Keep in mind that just because a room is a certain length does not mean that you can purchase a sofa, chest or dresser that long. A closet or door would not permit this, so it’s important that you are detailed in your drawing.

Creating a Floor Plan

If you are buying all new furniture for the space, it is recommended to have a good idea of what you are looking for before you start shopping. Again, keep in mind that the 8-foot sofa you have your eye on may fit against a wall, but if you need space for a table and lamp, you must be sure how to follow your floor plan precisely, this will just give you a general idea of what you can and cannot fit.

Measuring for Delivery

Another important thing to keep in mind is that what fits in your apartment may not actually be able to get into your apartment. You need to measure stairways, elevators, and all entryways, or you could find yourself in a sticky situation. To effectively do this, you will:

  • Measure the width and height of all interiors, entry ways, hallways and elevator doors.
  • Use the measurements to determine if the furniture will fit. It is a good idea to take a measuring tape shopping with you. Keep in mind that some furniture may fit if you turn it on an angle, so measure the piece on a diagonal, if the width won’t work.

Buying furniture for a smaller apartment may seem challenging at first, but really, a couple measurements will help substantially. It is also important to remember that less is more in a small space. The last thing you want to do is hire your apartment movers, and find out that your current or newly purchased belongings won’t fit.
