For Moving Vendors: Best Practices

Best Practices

You know that a successful move involves more than just showing up to your customer’s door on time, with a truck, ready to load their boxes. Preparation is the key to a successful move, so we’ve laid out some of the less obvious but very important best practices for movers to help you stand out. Have a look.

Collecting information

  • If possible, conduct an in-home consultation prior to moving day. This will allow you to get an in-person look at the customer’s inventory and see if their assessment is accurate. With this data, you can plan ahead for what size truck you’ll need, how many movers, and any additional materials that could be required on moving day.
  • During the consultation, also visually determine if there will be any difficult staircases to navigate, check on elevator use permits, and assess the parking situation for the truck. These are things your customers may not think of as they are busy packing.
  • If an in-home visit is not possible or desired, verbally go over the customer’s inventory and needs on the phone. This is one of the benefits of a confirmation call if conducted a few days before the move. Take the opportunity to ask clarifying questions and assure the customer you are covering your bases.

Have the materials you need for the job

  • When in doubt, round up and bring extra boxes, tools, shrink wrap, and moving blankets just in case. It is better to have extra than not enough when it comes to an expedient, efficient move that keeps customers happy and business flowing.
  • A panicked customer may decide to enlist your packing services at the last minute, so come prepared for that possibility with all of the supplies you’ll need. Pro tip: create a packing kit that can easily be loaded and unloaded from your moving truck without too much effort.
  • Along those lines, come prepared with the tools required for any disassembly required. Don’t rely on the customer to have the required materials – instead, prepare to impress them when you need only to run out to the truck and get your fully stocked toolbox.

Have your paperwork in order

  • Arriving at the customer’s home with your paperwork prepared and in order is one simple way to start the move day off right. They will appreciate your professionalism, and you’ll be able to proceed knowing you have all of the appropriate forms signed and taken care of.
  • Laws vary from state to state, but moving best practices require a Bill of Lading for interstate transport. Filling out this form for local moves is also a recommended, no matter what state you operate from. It serves to lay out all of the terms of the move, keep you protected, and helps the customer feel at ease.

These best practices for moving companies will help you stand out as a professional, attentive company that tends to every detail. Your customers will feel assured that they made the right choice in hiring you!
