The Best Bars to Grab Drinks in Pittsburgh

Best Bars to Grab Drinks

One of the milestones in every relocation is finding a new watering hole. For some, it’s one of the first things to do after unpacking some essential boxes and for good reason- it’s a great way to unwind and meet new people. Here are ten of the best places to quench your thirst and grab some drinks in Pittsburgh.

Independent Brewing Company

The Independent Brewing Company, located in Squirrel Hill, celebrates local craft beer and its brewers. The bar, whose name was inspired by a pre-prohibition cartel of local brewers, serves a wide variety of fresh craft beer made in Western Pennsylvania in a laid-back tavern style atmosphere. The fine music you will enjoy there is guaranteed to be played on the old school record player, and the beer is guaranteed to be fresh and fantastic.

The Allegheny Wine Mixer

If you’re a wine person, this is the place for you. A wide variety of imported and domestic wines are on offer, by the glass or by the bottle. The mixers have also come up with some refreshing wine cocktails, so if you’ve ever wondered what wine and coke would taste like when mixed- this is your chance to discover.

The Smiling Moose

Don’t be deterred by the Evil Dead posters or the loud music- the Smiling Moose is a well-loved sports bar where you can enjoy a great selection of craft beers and excellent food in a fun atmosphere. Local and national metal bands perform almost daily and weekly theme nights include karaoke and trivia.

Speakeasy

Hidden in the basement of Pittsburgh’s Omni William Penn hotel, this bar was recently renovated with an art-deco flair to restore its former glory as an illegal 1920’s saloon. Its bartenders skillfully serve classic cocktails like Rob Roys and Manhattans, while patrons enjoy the beautiful décor and classy atmosphere.

Bar Marco

Why should you have to drink the same cocktail everybody else is having? At Bar Marco, the highly qualified bar staff specializes in custom-mixing cocktails based on each and every patron’s likes and preferences. Located in the Strip District, the bar also offers an extensive wine list for those who are not so inclined to custom-mixed cocktails, presuming they exist.

Winghart’s Burger & Whiskey Bar

If you like your liquor with a side of tasty, Winghart’s is an excellent choice. The menu features an extensive variety of classic bar food such as pizza, mac and cheese and obviously burgers, all freshly made without any processed or ready-made ingredients. Creative choices include Punjabi Mac, blended with tikka masala sauce, Shipwreck burger with brie cheese and white truffle aioli, and homemade pierogies, a Polish delicacy.

Piper’s Pub

Located in the city’s historic South Side, Piper’s Pub is a family owned establishment with a simple agenda: good food, great drinks, awesome football (they’re Britons. They actually mean soccer) and friendly people. The Scotch and whiskey list are seemingly endless, and the kitchen churns out creative and delicious food, including classic British Isle dishes such as Scotch eggs (a must-try) and shepherd’s pie.

The Summit

Located on Mount Washington, the Summit is an unpretentious bar which boasts creative craft cocktails and an eclectic cuisine. The atmosphere is fun and friendly, and the bar even offers cards and board games to get the good times rolling.

The Urban Tap

Offering over 40 beers on tap, this gastro-pub on the South Side (or as they like to call it, Saahside… get it?) aims to please. Their menu sets out to infuse classic American bar food with a spirit of creative innovation, serving such dishes as BBQ brisket burger and shrimp & grits. The industrial design makes for a cool, urban atmosphere and the service is friendly and courteous.

Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh

If there was a theme park dedicated to beer, it would probably look like Hofbrauhaus with rides. Here you can enjoy communal beer drinking, delicious Bavarian food, and cheerful music along with some 350 future friends in the Bier Hall or opt for a more quiet time in the dining room. The Bier Garden has a lovely view of the waterfront and city skyline. You can even take home some germanophile memorabilia from the gift shop! Hopefully, there’s a team of Pittsburgh engineers out there somewhere planning the rides as we speak… Prost!
