Luckily a survey done by rental site Rent.com looked at cities with over 750,000 people, more than 25% of the population in the Millennial generation and low crime rates with some very specific criteria to determine the best Future New Home of the Newlyweds. These varied metropolitan areas have affordable rent, decent median household incomes, and of course some good culture and plenty of young millennials to keep the new couple company. Alexandria, VA
With its proximity to the nation’s capital and all of the jobs associated with that city, Alexandria is one of the cities on our list with the highest household income at just over $82k. The population of the city ranges with 26% of residents under 30, but a quick trip to DC will get you a whole lot more young professional friends and Alexandria’s own Old Town District is home to theaters, restaurants, and shops. If you and your new partner are planning to start a family, Alexandria offers the neighborhood feeling that DC can lack at an affordable price for the proximity: find yourself a two bedroom for around $2,600.
Fort Collins, CO
If you and your boo are more the outdoorsy types, consider a move to Fort Collins. It has easy access to some rugged and gorgeous high country as well as boasting around 300 days of sun every year — so when you’re out on the trail or making tracks in some fresh powder, remember to apply your sunscreen. 31% of the population is Millenial, a with a median income of just over $50k and two-bedroom apartments going for around $1,100, you’ll love the views in Fort Collins. Future planning? The city has one of the best-ranked school systems in the nation.
Lewisville, TX
If you’re looking for a little small-town charm without sacrificing the amenities of a city, take a look at this sweet southern town. Located in the northern part of the state, Lewisville is one of the fastest growing cities in the US. It still maintains its safety and charm, high-quality school districts, and of course that consistently warm Texas weather. Median rent for a two bedroom is around $1,200, but the median household income is a solid $56k — so you’ll be able to afford a nice spot for you and your sweetie (and maybe your child!) right near Lewisville Lake.
Lincoln, NE
Looking for something with that Middle America feel? Lincoln has a lot to offer as a city, including a University, a solid population of Millennials (26%), and a blossoming high-tech sector that keeps the unemployment remarkably low. Finding new job opportunities is one of the top reasons why people move to a new home, and though Nebraska might not seem the obvious choice, it could be just the ticket. You can find a two bedroom for the wildly low price of $625 a month, meaning you can save your hard-earned pennies for your future dreams (or for more dinners out in the bustling downtown). Expect a median household income around $50k.
Somerville, MA
While it might often get lumped in with Boston, Somerville is considered one of the most diverse cities in the nation on its own. The unique and culturally rich squares like Davis, Ball, and Teele are home to art, music, and just about any kind of restaurant you could imagine. Rent isn’t too bad either considering the proximity to Boston – $2,300 will get you a two bedroom, and with a median household income of $63k, you can still afford to take advantage of all of the amazing music, classes, and restaurants that make Somerville so interesting.
San Diego, CA
If you’re looking to perpetually feel like you’re on your beachfront honeymoon, San Diego should be top on your list. With 27% of the population falling in the Millennial age range and famously gorgeous weather, you’ll find lots to do outside and lots of peers to hang out with — making San Diego one of the best cities for young couples who still want to go out and enjoy the city’s nightlife and restaurant scene. You can find a two bedroom for around $2k, and with median household income around $64k, you and your spouse will be living the good life.
Newport News, VA
Haven’t heard of it yet? Take a look. With frontage along the James River as well as the Atlantic Ocean, water-loving couples will be excited to call Newport News home. The nightlife isn’t exactly hopping unless you’re interested in an evening paddle on the river or stroll along the beach, so this city is the most ideal for a quieter, outdoorsy couple. Vista, CA
California is making itself known on this list, and for good reason — the coastline is stunning and the culture is abundant. Only seven miles from the Pacific with abundant fields and trails to roam, Vista is a great city for newlyweds who want arts, culture, and entertainment as well as plenty of outdoor space for play. Get your two-bedroom for around $1,450, and then hit the beaches with your other Millennial friends.
Orem, UT
On the eastern shore of Lake Utah, at the foot of Mount Timpanogos, is a lovely city just waiting for the arrival of a happy couple. The scenery is stunning, and there is no shortage of things to do — get out on the Lake, take a hike to Bridal Falls, or head to the theater if the weather isn’t looking great. Median rent for a two-bedroom is a mere $900 while household income is up around $53k, so you’ll be able to get out and explore all that Utah has to offer. Provo and Vineyard are nearby, and Salt Lake City is just a 45-minute drive away.
Santa Clara, CA
California tops the list with this adorable city. Located in Silicon Valley just a bit south of San Francisco, it has a lot to offer — a booming job market in the tech industry (median household income is almost $89k), incredibly low crime rates, temperate weather all year round and affordable housing. The city is ripe with history from its namesake Spanish Mission and is home to Santa Clara University, one of the oldest institutes of higher learning in the state.
