Super Fresh NYC Farmer’s Markets

NYC Farmer’s Markets

Some people are under the impression that poor New Yorkers have nowhere to go to get fresh vegetables, fruit, etc. Do they not realize that there is more to New York than just the highly populated boroughs? Although in movies and on television, you rarely see rolling green hills or pastures when New York is spotlighted, it is more than streets lined with restaurants, cafes, theaters, and boutiques. Contrary to what many believe, there are actual farms in this state, and you will be able to find some fantatic NYC Farmer’s Markets nearby.

Greenmarket

This is not one Farmers Market, but rather a large chain of them found throughout the boroughs at specific locations on designated days. They have a nice schedule on their online site. You can find fresh seafood and meat, fruits and vegetables, honey and syrup, baked goods, jams and jellies and even homemade apparel and other accessories.

Founded in 1986, Greenmarket was created to promote regional agriculture and ensure that locals had access to nutritious and fresh, locally grown food. What started as 12 farmers has grown into 230 family farms and fishermen and 53 markets.

Essex Street Market

Located on the Lower East Side, the Essex Street Market offers over 20 merchants. Some of the merchants that you will find here include:

  • Meat and Fish – Heritage Meat Shop, Luis Meat Market, New Star Fish Market and Rainbo’s Fish
  • Gourmet Foods – Boubouki, Formaggio Essex, La Tiendita, Ni Japanese Delicacies, Pain D’Avignon and Roni-Sue’s Chocolate
  • Produce and Groceries – Batista Mini Market, Essex Farm Fruits and Vegetables and Viva Fruits and Vegetables

There are even eateries, a barbershop, art gallery and places to buy beer, wine and liquor inside.

Eagle Street Rooftop Farm

This is a 6,000-square-foot organic vegetable farm that started in 2009. It is open to the public on Sundays from 9am to 4pm, and this is known as the place to get lettuce, mustard greens and culinary herbs, such as oregano, sage, and chives.

Park Slope Farmers Market

This started as a small community market, but now there are locations in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Rockland, and Westchester. In addition to your typical market goods, you will also find plenty of local bakeries as well as handmade food artisans with delicious things to try.

Small Markets

  • Jamaica Farmers Market – Four different farms offer fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, flowers, and plants at this market.
  • Cooper Park Farmers Market – This small, but busy market is found on a sidewalk in Brooklyn, selling fruits and vegetables. It is the type of place that you will be remembered and greeted with a smile as you return over-and-over again.
  • Williamsburg Greenmarket – Vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices are available for two farms and one orchard. If you ask your NYC movers about Greenmarket locations, this is often the one most recommended.
