How to Pack Your Kitchen

Pack Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the hardest room of the home to pack. With many cabinets and drawers full of small, fragile items, there is a lot to do before the movers arrive. Consult this simple checklist to organize and pack your kitchen.

Sort And Simplify Things

Take everything out of the cabinets, drawers and the pantry and go through it all. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you have not used in the last six months. You can sort things into four categories:

Donate or sell— Moving is the perfect time for downsizing; you can plan a garage sale or even better donate to a local charity.

Essentials— dishes, silverware, coffeemaker, toaster, dish soap, and a single all-purpose pan. Use these in your last days at your old house and first days in your new one.

Seldom used— Wine glasses, vases, small appliances, and the balance of your pots and pans, mixing bowls, platters and other wares. Pack these now.

Pantry— For the boxes, bottles and cans of food that you will be moving. Keep out only what you need, and pack up the rest.

Collect Proper Packing Materials

To do the job right, you need the right tools! Use the Unpakt Box Guide to make a list of how many boxes you will need for packing. Other packing materials such as bubble wrap, foam plates, newspaper, packing tape, labels, and permanent markers will all come in handy and will help protect your belongings from breaking.

Delicate Dishes

Packing your dishes right is important to prevent breaking them during transit. Pack them standing on their sides like record albums for best results. You should use foam plates between them and at the top and bottom to pad them. Wad up newspaper to fill any gaps and keep the contents from shifting. Mark these boxes as “fragile.” Check our detailed guide: 5 best practices for packing dishes.

Glassware

Glassware is easy to pack when you use this simple trick– pack each piece in a brown paper lunch sack and fill the voids in the box with wadded newspaper to cushion them. Don’t forget to mark this box as “fragile”, too. For more elaborate ways check out our article: packing wine glasses and bottles.

Utensils

Use large plastic zippered bags to pack your utensils, and tape them all together around the plastic for easy packing. They can go in the dish or glass boxes without taking much room when packed in this way.

Cookbooks

Cookbooks, like all books, are heavy; pack them in the smallest boxes available. Remember to pack them flat to keep the spines in good shape.
If you haven’t already, designate an area for your packed boxes. Find a spot out of the way, perhaps in the garage or a seldom used room, to stack things while packing. Getting started for your move early helps ease the stress of moving and now that you’ll have the kitchen packed, you can breathe a little easier.
