How to Find Your Favorite Local Coffee Shop in a New City

Find Your Favorite Local Coffee Shop

Landing in a new city, you quickly realize that there’s something essential missing: all of your favorite spots, including that coffee shop a few blocks away, where the barista makes your favorite cortado just right. Fear not: although it may take a few tries (and some mediocre coffee), you’ll soon have your favorite market, favorite restaurant, and yes, a new favorite coffee spot. Here are our tips for finding the best coffee in the city.

Start exploring on foot, close to your new home

You’ll want to find a spot that’s got both amazing coffee as well as a convenient location. Take a walk around the blocks closest to your new apartment to see what’s on offer and see what piques your curiosity. What do you love in a coffee shop? Do you prefer a quiet atmosphere for reading, or a more vibrant, social vibe? Finding a local coffee shop can be as simple as letting the shop’s ambiance draw you in.

Ask the locals. They know

When searching out tips for moving to a new city, this should always be top of the list. They’ve already done their research to find a new favorite place, so why not let them tell you which spots they love and which they avoid? Be prepared with a little about what you look for in a coffee (straight black, a foamy latte, a peel-the-paint-off double espresso shot?) so they can point you in the right direction.

Check out the local bloggers and small-scale publications

In just about every city there is some sort of foodie scene, and if it’s a great coffee shop, someone’s written about it. Do a little internet search for food blogs in your new city and see what they have to say. If you’ve got discerning tastes in java, this might be the best way to quickly find the best coffee in the city. Foodie tip: look for a shop that roasts their own beans. They’ll be the freshest tasting cup of coffee around!

FourSquare, Yelp, and other review sites can be helpful

If you’re on the hunt for a coffee shop in the city center, you’re probably looking at a high density of options. Scroll through some reviews on FourSquare, Yelp, or other review sites to weed out the worst and see which options folks really love. Do keep in mind that people tend to review eateries when they either love them or hate them, and your tastes in coffee may be different. But they can alert you to spots that have friendly service, good prices, and tasty beans!
