With how many cheap moving companies there are, it is surprising that so many people choose to tackle this monumental task themselves. If you are considering skipping the movers, you really should reconsider. Right now, you are probably looking at the big picture, and focusing on expense. Sure, you may save yourself a few dollars, but at what cost? Plus, many people assume that they will save a lot more than they actually do. Below are a few reasons why it is just not worthwhile.
Stress
There is a tremendous amount of stress involved with handling a move yourself. Yes, you will still likely be a bit stressed regardless, but eliminating the movers from the equation will increase your stress and anxiety significantly. Now, rather than worrying if your movers will show up on time, you have to stress about picking up the moving truck, loading, and unloading, dealing with heavy objects, deciding where to park ad returning the truck before a certain time, so you don’t get charged extra. Not to mention, you have to know that of the many people who will say they will help you, only a few will probably show up.
In case you don’t already know, stress is harmful to both the body and mind. Stress can cause high blood pressure, headaches, hormonal imbalance, digestive problems and stomach ulcers. Not to mention, the long-term negative effect of stress, including heart attack, cancer and a multiplier of other problems. Mentally, the effects of stress are frightening; consisting of depression, mood swings, eating disorders, indecisiveness and impaired judgment.
Injury
You don’t need to have a heavy appliance, a pool table, or massive entertainment center to sustain an injury moving. Simply carrying boxes up and down stairs, and in and out of the truck can really do a number on your back and joints. Plus, you can always take a tumble on the stairs or slip and fall on the wet floor. Of course, if you do have furniture décor pieces or appliances, one wrong move could land you in the emergency room and off work for a while. Is the physical strain and risk of injury really worth saving a few dollars?
Time Consuming
When you hire movers, you can get up in the morning, take a shower, pack any last minute items and know that in just a few hours, you will be unpacking your new place. When you handle the move yourself, it can often take the entire day. This is especially true if you don’t rent a moving truck and have to make several trips back and forth. By the time you are done moving everything, you certainly will not want to unpack or clean anything, which pushes being settled back even further.
Insurance
Even cheap moving companies have to have insurance. So, you can have peace-of-mind knowing that if your flat screen gets damaged, you can file a claim for a replacement. What are you going to do if your buddy drops his end of the TV while the two of you are carrying it and it breaks? You certainly can’t file a claim with him, and you really can’t expect him to pay for a new one. After all, he is doing you a favor. It could have a negative effect on your friendship, which would be very unfortunate. Of course, this can be avoided by simply hiring a mover.
