Why Hoboken is a Good City to Raise a Family

Hoboken

It may or may not surprise you, but more and more young families are taking their leave of the buzz of New York City and heading just over the border into New Jersey. Moving to Hoboken offers them a quieter pace of life, neighborhood streets for taking walks, and easy access to the city. Families are finding more space for their money without the incredibly long commute to the New York suburbs and loving it. Here are a few more reasons you might want to consider relocating to Hoboken with your family.

The Hoboken Public Library

Built in 1897, it is still housed in its original building. They have a wide variety of children’s programs as well as access to museum passes that you and your kids can check out for the day — including the American Museum of Natural History, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Intrepid Museum, Frick, Museum of the City of NY, and the New York Historical Society.

Transportation into the City is Easy

Hop on the PATH train and it’s only 14 minutes into Manhattan or ten minutes to the World Trade Center station. The New York Waterway ferry from Hoboken Terminal runs to Pier 11/Wall Street in about 15 minutes, so the commute from home will be quick and doesn’t require driving through New York traffic!

Family Fun Nights in Shipyard Park

There is a great highlight of the summer months with music, theater, movies, and other family-friendly events put on by the city. There are many fun activities in Hoboken, many of which are available free of charge, and offers an opportunity for families who just moved to Hoboken to get to know other kids and parents, building community in your new city. And really, how could you miss The Bubble Queen & The Royal Bubble Pops?

Sinatra Park

This park becomes the cutest thing on the eastern seaboard when The Hoboken Baby Parade takes over. Flaunt your little cutie on a parent-made float in the parade among a sea of adorable tiny people, and compete for awards like Best-Dressed Child, Most Creative Float, and Best Dressed Family. It’s time to get creative, folks — we’re betting there will be a few too many ladybugs.

Free Pre-K Programs

The state funds free pre-K programs at six sites across Hoboken, meaning that early childhood education is available to everyone. Sometimes there is a waitlist, but if you do your research before you relocate to the city you may be able to time things out perfectly. The city also has three public charter schools if that’s the route you prefer to take, with the Hoboken Charter School going all the way through 12th grade.

Hoboken Family Alliance

Last but not least, this is a great resource for parents to immediately connect to all the city has to offer for your family. Whether it’s information sessions for local private schools, listings of all the exciting events happening in the city, or all the information you need on local parks, this resource is a must for parents who are new to the city.
