Moving Terminology – A Glossary of What You Need to Know

Moving Terminology

When you receive a moving quote, there may be some sections or terms that seem confusing or unclear. This glossary, of the most misunderstood moving terms, will help you have a better understanding of your moving quote and what to expect in regards to pricing, services, and possible hidden fees.

Accessorial Service Charges

If you decide to add services, such as packing or unpacking your boxes, this section spells out the associated fees that are not included in the standard rates and fees for transportation.

Assessed Value

The term refers to the claimed value of your belongings that will be handled by the moving company. This value determines how much you will pay to insure the items in case of damage or loss.

Bill Of Lading

This official document is used as the written agreement between you and the moving agent and includes the goods the company will transport and the associated prices. It’s important to go over this closely. Also, keep it handy if you plan to use the relocation as a tax deduction at the end of the year.

Declaration Of Articles Of Extraordinary Value

This document is used when you have articles that need to be moved that have an unusually high value. This value is normally for items over $100 per pound. The moving company must be notified and the particular items must be easily identified.

Full Replacement Value Coverage

This type of coverage allows you to opt-in for full replacement amounts of any lost or damaged property during the move. Normally, there is a set premium required for every $1,000 of value. This item can only be purchased before the move, typically 2 business days prior.

Linehaul Charges

Linehaul charges refer to transporting household goods over long distances. These charges are determined by the total volume or the total weight of the cargo, as well as the mileage from one location to another.

Long Carry

Long carry refers to when a mover can’t find parking or there are unforeseen circumstances that cause the movers to carry items for a longer distance.

Valuation

The valuation section describes what is covered by the moving companies if the are responsible for damage. Weather-related damage or acts of vandalism are not covered under this section.
Unpakt helps outline all these charges for you, so the terms are more easily digestible and clear. If you are ever unsure of a term or section on your moving quote, be sure to speak up and ask questions. The moving company is taking care of your belongings and it’s your responsibility to make sure you understand the agreement before you sign on the dotted line.
