It really does not matter what month you visit NYC, there is something exciting going on. However, locals will often tell you that August is the month they most look forward to. If you are planning a move here or have recently relocated, then you should know exactly what you have to look forward to. Below are just a few of the exciting events happening n NYC in August 2013.

 

NYC Unicycle Festival (August 30 – September 1)

More than 200 riders flocked to NYC for this unusual festival last year, and several hundred more visitors put their balance to the ultimate test and tried to ride a unicycle. To kick off the event, a 13-mile unicycle ride traverses through Brooklyn on August 30th. The main event can be found on Governors Island and includes competitions, exhibits, and races. All ages are welcome to come out and enjoy the fun-filled day.

 

Harlem Week (July 28 – August 18)

A cornucopia of celebrations takes place over these weeks. The event was created to showcase the rich cultural, economic, and political history of the area. It also brings awareness to the mass amount of talent here. Events to enjoy include indoor and outdoor concerts, a 5K Harlem Run, a children’s festival, auto shows, Family Health Walk-A-Thon, senior citizen’s day, and so much more. The centerpiece of the event is the two-day street fair that takes place near the end of the event, offering activities for kids, art, live music, and educational booths.

 

US Open (August 26 – September 29)

Every tennis fan in the city will be at this event. Quite honestly, though, you don’t need to have knowledge of this game to enjoy the US Open. This is an event you don’t want to miss. Please note that security will be increased at this event to ensure the safety of everyone. All fans will be screened prior to being granted access to the gates. You may not bring backpacks, aerosol cans, noise-making devices, recording devices, hard coolers, sealed packages, alcohol, bottles or cans, weapons, laptops, food, animals (service animals are permitted), flags or banners, promotional materials, or laser pointing devices.

 

Electric Zoo (August 30 – September 1)

If you live for techno, dancehall, agro-dubstep, and other dance music varieties, this is an event that must not be missed. There are five stages this year, and it is sure to be the best party you ever attend. Just a few of the headlining DJs include Benny Benassi, Excision, Knife Party, Above & Beyond, Alesso, Kill Paris, Otto Knows, and so much more.

 

Annual Downtown Dance Festival (August 10 – August 16)

You really do not realize how much talent there is in NYC until you spend time at this annual festival. The Battery Dance Company will be celebrating its 32nd anniversary of this energetic festival this year. Performances are offered by local and international performers, and it offers the opportunity for emerging and professional dancers to showcase their original works of artistic merit.
