Changes in insurance coverage or rates
Your address affects your insurance — whether it’s your car, your health, your rental insurance, reporting your new address could shift your rates even if you only moved across town. If you are moving out of state, you may be faced with finding a new insurance company, or you may just see a shift in rates and fine-print. Hopefully, you’re one of the lucky ones who only see rates go down, but it is wise to do some research in advance to anticipate the impact it will have on your budget. Also be sure to choose your moving insurance in advance — you’ll get a better deal than if you opt-in last minute.

Utilities fees or costs
If your previous home was heated with oil or propane, will you need to pay to leave a full tank? Perhaps a cord of wood? Some electric companies charge a small fee for changing over the billing party, and many internet providers will treat you like a new customer who has never had the internet in that space before. Be sure you’re clear what you’re stepping into with utility costs, and what you’ll need to take care of before you can leave your previous home.

Replacing old stuff
Chances are you left behind some of your old appliances, kitchenware, maybe even the couch you’d been wanting to replace after the cat shredded the sides. Be sure you set aside a budget for furnishing your new home with whatever you need, and take into account a larger buffer if they are big-ticket items like a washer and/or dryer. You’ll also need to stock up on smaller things like cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, but those add up to a significant bill down the line!

Storage costs
If for some reason you aren’t able to move into your new home right away, or you realize that your new home is smaller than you thought, you may need to arrange for storage space for some of your belongings. Whether you opt for a short-term option as a bridge or are looking at longer-term storage for heirlooms or furniture, there will be a cost involved. Miscellaneous costs
Though you can never fully anticipate every little cost that may pop up, set aside an extra cushion for things like the broken gym or yoga studio memberships, getting a new driver’s license and registering your car, or registering your pet with your new city. Though these fees are little, they sure do add up. Be prepared.
Lastly: get a solid moving estimate from a reliable company, and get it all in writing. The last surprise cost you want is a change in moving fees, which is a risk of moving estimates from inexperienced or unprofessional movers. Choose wisely.
